| Other Information: |
Was the first Democrat to file a presidential campaign committee, in May 2002
Dean is considered to be the only candidate, as of 2002, openly speaking
out against Bush's policies
Obtained the office of Vermont Governor after his predecessor, Richard Snelling,
collapsed by his swimming pool
Dean and his wife, Judith Steinberg-Dean, met at med school - she still practices
medicine full-time; together they have 2 kids, Anna and Paul
Dean is noted in Vermont for being a family man - as Governor, he never scheduled
meetings before 9 a.m. so that he could personally take his children to
school
The most unstable part of his campaign so far is fundraising - he raised just under
$3000 in the first quarter of 2002
Dean has hit rough spots with his state's congress, such as during his proposal and
support of Civil Unions (which several of his legislators strongly opposed);
At one point, Dean said the Democrats in Vermont's state senate
lacked "backbone" - within days emails began circulating among state legislators
mocking Dean's political ambition and presidential endeavor
Dean is a self-proclaimed "fiscal conservative" whose platforms
offer widely-noted Progressive reforms - this combination has won him much
attention (and endorsement) from other politicians
At present, Dean is labeled the anti-war candidate -- most of the other
Democrats running for the ticket have voted for or supported the war on Iraq
After Al Gore announced he would not run in 2004, Dean, John
Kerry, and John Edwards immediately began pursuing Rob
Reiner's endorsement, as Reiner was a huge backer of Gore and donated much money
to his campaign. Who got the endorsement? Howard Dean.
In the 1970s, one of Dean's brothers was hiking in Laos when he was captured by
Communists and executed - some speculate that this spurned Dean's interest in political
offices
Dean has personally endorsed Meetup.com
gatherings - in a statement dated January 28, 2003, Dean encouraged his supporters to
use Meetup and said that he would visit the get-togethers as he toured the U.S. -
he has also begun to propose topics of discussion for upcoming meetings
